Fall for us is more than Pumpkin Spice Lattes and Cider Donuts
Fall on the Farm: Time to Plant for Spring Blooms
Fall is here at Something Somehow Pretty Amazing, and our micro flower farm in Indianapolis is humming with activity.
While many people think gardening ends with the first frost, autumn is actually our most important season for planning and planting.
Why Fall Planting Matters in Indianapolis
Strong Roots: Cool autumn air and warm soil help young plants grow deep roots.
Early Spring Flowers: Fall-planted crops bloom weeks earlier than spring-planted ones in our local Indiana climate.
Better Quality: Hardy annuals and perennials grown over the winter produce longer, stronger stems and bigger blooms.
What We Are Planting Now
Hardy Annuals: We are putting in larkspur, snapdragons, bupleurum, and sweet peas. These plants love the chilly Indiana winter and survive freezing temperatures under protective covers.
Spring Bulbs: Tulips and daffodils go into the ground before the first hard freeze so they can wake up early next spring.
Perennials: We are dividing and planting perennial favorites like echinacea and rudbeckia for future seasons.
How We Protect Our Crops
Low Tunnels: We use hoops and heavy frost cloth to keep the winter wind and heavy snow off delicate leaves.
Mulch and Compost: A thick layer of compost keeps the soil warm and adds vital nutrients for the spring rush.
Fall planting takes a lot of work, but seeing those first colorful stems push through the cold spring soil makes it all worth it.
